Height
When you are choosing a crib that is bedside, choose one that can be adjusted to a comfortable height for you. In its NPR In its NPR, the CPSC looked into the possibility of additional requirements for bedside sleepers, like the requirement that these products satisfy the minimum side height requirement for bassinets, or at the very least, meet the maximum height requirement for the side rail. The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements weren't efficient or effective in reducing the number of incidents where infants are entrapped by the bedside rail as well as an adult bed.
Many of the reported incidents in the NPR included bedside sleepers with multiple uses that can be converted to different modes like bassinets and play yards. Several commenters suggested the CPSC add an alternative option to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers that are multi-use that would allow them to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment. This attachment can be permanently attached or removed when the product is not being used as a baby bassinet.
The CPSC is examining these and other comments that were received in response to its NPR regarding bedside sleepers. The Commission will consider these comments when it votes on the final rule which is expected to come out in November 2021.
